2,500 MILE SERVICE

Cooling system

  • Check coolant level.

Engine

  • Drain sump and refill with fresh oil.
  • Check and adjust distributor contact breaker point gap.
  • Check condition of fuel filter.
  • Top up carburettor dashpot oil levels.
  • Check and adjust alternator, water pump and hydraulic pump drive belt (if applicable).

Transmission

  • Adjust clutch push rod clearance (if applicable).
  • Check and top up the automatic transmission oil level (if applicable).

Front suspension and steering

  • Lubricate king pin grease nipples.
  • Lubricate track rod nipples.
  • Lubricate steering rack nipple.
  • Check power steering hydraulic fluid reservoir level (if applicable).

Brakes

  • Check and adjust handbrake.
  • Lubricate handbrake pivots.
  • Top up brake and clutch hydraulic fluid reservoirs.
  • Check foot brake and examine brake pads for wear.

Electrical

  • Top up battery electrolyte level and check security of terminals.

Tyres

  • Check tyre pressures and tread condition.
  • Check wheel spokes and tighten if necessary.
5,000 MILE SERVICE

Cooling system

  • Drain the cooling system, flush and refill with the correct solution to suit climatic conditions.
  • Check the system for levels and the condition of hoses. “Bars” corrosion inhibitor should be used at all times.

Engine

  • Drain engine sump and refill with fresh oil.
  • Renew the oil filter element.
  • Lubricate the distributor and adjust the contact breaker points.
  • Clean, reset and test the sparking plugs.
  • Change the fuel filter unit.
  • Check the mixture settings.
  • Adjust the drive belts and check condition.
  • Adjust tension of timing chains.

Transmission and rear suspension

  • Adjust clutch push rod clearance (if applicable).
  • Top up manual gearbox or automatic transmission oil level (as applicable).
  • Lubricate propeller shaft spline.
  • Check and top up rear axle oil level.
  • Top up rear shock absorber fluid level.

Steering and front suspension

  • Adjust king pin upper bearings.
  • Lubricate king pin grease nipples.
  • Lubricate track rod nipples.
  • Lubricate steering rack nipple.
  • Check and adjust toe-in.
  • Check condition of track rod and ball joint rubber gaiters.
  • Check power steering hydraulic fluid reservoir level.

Brakes

  • Top up brake and clutch hydraulic fluid reservoirs.
  • Lubricate handbrake pivots.
  • Lubricate handbrake cable grease nipples.
  • Check and adjust handbrake.
  • Check foot brake and examine brake pads for wear.

Electrical

  • Top up the battery electrolyte level and check security of terminals.

Wheels and Tyres

  • Check wheel spokes and tighten if necessary.
  • Check tyre pressures and tread condition.
  • Balance the road wheels and interchange them. Grease the splines and tapers.

General

  • Lubricate with an oilcan all pivots, moving parts, door catches, etc.
  • Clean and grease the bonnet catch.
  • Check the general condition of the bodywork and operation of catches etc. Clear the door drain holes.
  • Carry out an abbreviated road test and check operation of brakes, steering lights, instruments and controls.
  • Report defects.
10,000 MILE SERVICE

Cooling System

  • Drain the cooling system, flush and refill with the correct coolant solution to suit climatic conditions.
  • Check the system for leaks and the condition of hoses, “Bars” corrosion inhibitor should be used at all times.

Engine

  • Drain engine sump and refill with fresh oil.
  • Renew oil filter element.
  • Renew the sparking plugs.
  • Adjust drive belts and check condition.
  • Change the air filter element.
  • Clean the carburettor fuel strainers.
  • Change the fuel filter unit.
  • Check all fuel pipe connections for leakage.
  • Top up the carburettor dash pot oil levels.
  • Adjust tension of timing chains.
  • Check and if necessary, adjust the mixture settings.

Transmission and rear suspension

  • Drain manual gearbox and refill with fresh oil (if applicable).
  • Top up automatic transmission oil level (if applicable).
  • Adjust clutch push rod clearance (if applicable).
  • Lubricate the propeller shaft spline and check tightness of flange bolts.
  • Drain rear axle and refill with fresh oil.
  • Check the condition and tightness of all rear suspension linkage bolts, including shock absorber
    and Watts linkage mounting bolts and bushes. Top up shock absorbers.
  • Lubricate rear hub grease nipples.

Steering and front suspension

  • Inspect track rod ball joints.
  • Check condition of track rod and ball joint rubber gaiters.
  • Inspect steering box mountings.
  • Adjust king pin upper bearings.
  • Inspect steering column universal joints.
  • Lubricate king pin grease nipples.
  • Lubricate steering grease nipples.
  • Dismantle front hubs and re-pack with grease.
  • Check and adjust toe-in.
  • Check power steering hydraulic fluid reservoir level.

Brakes

  • Check and adjust handbrake
  • Lubricate handbrake pivots and grease the cables.
  • Top up brake and clutch hydraulic reservoirs.
  • Check all brake pipe connections for leaks. Inspect flexible brake hoses and all metal pipes.
  • Check foot brake and examine the brake pads for wear.

Electrical

  • Top up the battery electrolyte level, remove and clean the terminals and smear lightly with
  • petroleum jelly.
  • Check operation of lights, instruments and window lift motors.
  • Visually check harness, terminals and security of units.

Wheels and tyres

  • Check wheel spokes and tighten if necessary.
  • Check tyre pressures and general condition of the tyres.
  • Balance the road wheels, interchange them and grease the splines and tapers.

General

  • Lubricate with an oilcan all pivots, moving parts, door catches, etc.
  • Clean and grease the bonnet catch.
  • Check the general condition of the bodywork and operation of catches, etc. Clear the door drain holes.
  • Carry out a road test to check operation and general condition of the car. Report any defects.
